Energy Professional - Technical Analysis, Engineering, and Management

Energy efficiency evaluation  and implementation

Alfred Lutz, PE, CEM
Energy Engineering, Consulting, and Analysis -                      Making Energy Efficiency Happen
I’m an energy professional, specializing in evaluating and implementing sustainable energy and efficiency projects.

Most recently, I’ve been involved in energy efficiency project evaluation for large commercial and industrial end users. Targeted results include operational optimization of energy efficiency programs at large integrated investor owned utilities (IOUs).

At Itron, I developed and led an engineering group specializing in energy efficiency project impact evaluation for their Consulting and Analysis group in Oakland, CA.

As President of AJL Resources, LLC, I’ve worked with utilities and other consulting companies to develop and improve processes for energy saving estimation, technical resource manual (TRM) development, and energy efficiency project evaluation. I also worked with a variety of energy end users to implement energy related projects, and have considerable experience with universities, hospitals, schools, multifamily housing, retail entities, office buildings, wastewater treatment facilities, and other energy intensive industrial sectors.

I’ve worked extensively directly for consulting firms performing engineering design focusing on energy efficiency measures, and also assisted electric utility ESCOs in the area of performance contracting.

Specific areas of expertise include:
• Energy Project and Program Evaluation and Implementation
• Building End Use Energy Analysis
• Advanced Metering
• Combined Heat and Power
• Water Conservation
• Sustainability Consulting
• Technology Assessments

CERTIFICATIONS & ACCREDITATIONS: Professional Engineer (PE) in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, an Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Life Member, a member of ASHRAE, and a USGBC LEED Accredited Professional (AP).

Questions & Answers

What are your long-term goals?
Continuing to contribute in any number of ways to making energy efficiency and renewable energy projects happen. The work we do will make businesses and governments better and help us create a sustainable world.
What are you working on right now?
Advising and supporting energy evaluation and implementation efforts for a number of entities.
Describe your greatest accomplishment.
Being who I am and willing to take chances - developing my own undergraduate program, leaping into the Peace Corps, waiting for the right career start in a niche profession, and taking the time to build a talented robust engineering team.
Who are your main influences?
In my career, my great and supportive bosses - especially those less technical and more business- driven. I think it was the common affinity for results causing those strong bonds. The greatest influences in my personal life really are my strong family and friends.
Why did you choose your profession?
I was always - from a very young age - been interested in science. Later, through camping and hiking, I was inspired by nature. I saw huge opportunities and challenges in the energy space, and realized the potential of energy efficiency - in the form of applied science and engineering - to be a great win-win solution for businesses and the planet. Instead of being against energy development in its worst forms, I voted to be for energy efficiency.
